I have an OpenID. I rarely use it, though, because I'm concerned for security reasons and I don't know what OpenID is doing with my data. One of the major issues surrounding online media consolidation is that it makes behaviorial targeting a lot easier. Is OpenID sharing in this trend, under the guise of Open-ness?

Haven't tried Zimdesk, but I have tried other Web Oses. I think they are considered too slow to be commercially viable. And besides, will everything eventually move online? I think a desktop-online hybrid model will prevail.

I think there is a disconnect between the power individuals crave and companies want. Like Siva said at the lecture we attended, the user-generated content movement is one big fat gift from us, the budding artists, to the companies that host our material. Then again, that's not a bad trade-off, I don't think.

Maybe the pricing means they aren't playing with the data (selling it to advertisers and such) like they might if the service were free.

Incidentally, wordpress is watching...

Excellent analysis. Here's what a librarian has to say: “Privacy in an online world is becoming harder and harder to accomplish. The only real solution is to not go online at all and that’s nearly impossible to do.”

Can a brotha get some privacy laws in place?

"the most relevant concern that emerges is privacy because operating in the cloud and allowing a third party to store and/or process your digital information requires a high level of trust."

...or a very good contract!

Did you know that Penn has outsourced its email operations to Microsoft live? What is Microsoft getting in return, I wonder? I know what the students are getting--a better webmail interface! Did you use Penn webmail when you were a student?

Great find. This is a persistent issue in libraries and archives. It is definitely cheaper and easier to have our data hosted remotely, but what are we giving up in the process?

Fortunately in the library world, because librarians/archivists are really uptight and cognizant of these kinds of issues, most of the hosting companies work with the libraries to make sure there isn't something funny going on with the data. Basically, the library pays the host some money and they store the data and maintain it. You wouldn't ever see a reputable library allow a for-profit company to use its data however they saw fit.

...oh wait.

EC2 is NOT free...clients must pay based on the amount of data transfered. See the link to Amazon's website in the blog entry to view the pricing chart and explanation.

One more issue that was left out...

What about companies that can NOT rely on cloud computing (the use of internet infrastructure) to store data because of regulatory compliance?

Yeah, I mean, exactly how do they collect and process that info? I feel like I must repeat this caveat--I don't mind Google using my data in exchange for a free application, within reason.
